Alcoa Foundation funds after school enrichment program in Taylor
The Alcoa Foundation has become a partner with the Interagency Support Council of East Williamson County Inc. and Taylor ISD in an effort to provide opportunities for Duck University students in Taylor Independent School District’s 21st Century Community Learning Center after school program to improve reading, math, and science skills. Funds from the Alcoa Foundation will support Alcoa employees from the Rockdale Operations and community volunteers as they mentor the students; serve as role models, and share skills and experiences. Community volunteers and Alcoa employees from the Rockdale Operations will work with children individually to help with reading, math, and science, writing, and study skills. These volunteers will assist children to improve their academic performance. There will be time to share stories about the adults’ childhood, life experiences, work experiences, and history. Special projects such as traditional crafts, art work, and learning about the environment will be included. Duck University students will also benefit by having community volunteers and Alcoa employees from the Rockdale Operations as role models.
JoAnn Barcak, Director of Duck University, “states that this is a dream come true for her students to have the opportunity to have mentors.”  More than 300 Kindergarten through 8th grade students head to Duck University for enrichment activities and individual assistance with reading, math, and science, writing, and study skills. This grant will enrich this program and our children. Duck University has had a waiting list since its inception in 2004.
The Gardens of Taylor, a premiere development of active seniors have joined the enrichment effort by providing their community room twice a week for the volunteers and students to work together.
Interested volunteers should contact Duck University at 352-6845 or Interagency Support Council at 352-9898.
